Log #39 George Town - Emerald Bay - George Town January 4 - 20, 2008

Jim’s roommate before me, Tom Morris, and his wife, Susan, arrived in George Town on January 4 and we got to have them as our guests until they and Jim left for the states on January 16.  We had thought that having so much time we would sail north and see some of the Bahamas that we missed when we blew down to get to George Town in time to meet PJ and Tim for Christmas.  Unfortunately, the winds and weather didn’t cooperate and we were kind of stuck in the George Town area.

We did get to do some hiking in the tropical forests, and to go to a couple of the local restaurants.  They got to see cruiser’s big night out to play Trivial Pursuit (we lost) and to join us in cheering the Giants on to their big win over Dallas.  We also got to walk along the beach and collect sand dollars.  Pretty tame stuff.

On Sunday, January 13 we moved the boat up to Emerald Bay Marina as I won’t stay on the boat on anchor when Jim is gone (can’t re-anchor by myself if the boat drags).  The marina is adjacent to a beautiful condo community called Grand Isle Villas of Emerald Bay which is adjacent to the Four Seasons Resort at Emerald Bay.  Excellent restaurants there and Tom and Susan got to see two sides of the Exumas – the rustic side and the resort side.

Jim returned from his “boy’s weekend” in West Palm Beach on Saturday, January 19 and we moved the boat back down to George Town and got anchored in time to see the Pats beat San Diego and the Giants beat Green Bay – what a game!  On to the Super Bowl for the Pats and Giants!!!!!!  Jim and I were the only people in the bar cheering for the Giants so, of course Jim had to cheer louder than anyone else.  In the last two minutes of the game some guy bet him $60 that the Giants would lose.  Jim bought a round of drinks for the bar with the winnings and gave the guy back ½ of the left over money.

On our trip down from Emerald Bay our hand-held GPS that drives our cockpit chart plotter stopped working.  It does everything but find the satellites. Since we had those charts in the computer we didn’t buy the very expensive computer chips for the GPS that is in the boat itself so now we don’t have any electronic charts for south of the Bahamas.  Needless to say, Jim is researching another hand-held GPS so we will probably be here in George Town for the Super Bowl waiting for that to come in.

We only have a couple of electronic things that haven’t been replaced this year.  Several people we’ve talked to here in George Town have been victims of “proximity lightening strikes” and experienced the slow demise of their electronics just as we have.  We probably could go back and claim it all on insurance, but since we’ve already paid for it all it’s too much bother.

That brings you up to date!
